Key Features of Claw Couplings:
- Symmetrical Design: These couplers connect to themselves, so there is no male and female half to keep track of on site.
- Built for Air: Unlike camlocks, claw couplings are designed for compressed air service — this is the correct fitting for pneumatic lines.
- Three Variants Stocked: Surelock, Type A (European pattern) and Type B (USA pattern). Surelock and Type A are cross-compatible.
- Full Connection Range: Each variant available as male thread, female thread and hosetail, so you can build a complete line from compressor to tool.
Applications for Claw Couplings:
- Construction and Civil: Air supply to breakers, jackhammers and pneumatic tools.
- Quarrying and Mining: Mobile air systems where connections are made and broken frequently.
- Roading and Infrastructure: Compressor-to-tool lines.
- Workshop Air Systems: Fixed and semi-fixed compressed air reticulation.
Fitting Them Safely:
- Always Fit the Lock Pin: Claw couplings should be secured with a safety lock pin once connected. Without it the coupling can work loose under vibration and separate under pressure.
- Use a Whip Check: A whip check restraint across every hose-to-hose and hose-to-tool connection stops the hose thrashing if a coupling lets go. This is standard practice and required under a number of international safety standards for compressed air lines.
- Match Your Thread Standard: Type B runs NPT thread rather than BSP. Check what your existing gear uses before ordering.
